Sent the thought out into the universe...and here is what I got...

July 16th, 2008 at 05:40 am

Hi all.

I recently posted about my questions on making friends...I was wondering how others make new friends...and I guess I sent that thought out to the universe...because without much work on my part a few really cool things have transpired since that post.

1. A very dear friend invited me to spend a day out this weekend...we have never actually just took off like that. She has kiddie obligations...and I am usually busy playing catch up...but we spent the day "window" shopping and wine tasting...and decided to make reservations for her, her hub, me, my hub to get away for a weekend in October.

2. I was invited to go to a comedy show at our county fair this weekend (my job is paying) with several of my co-workers...many of who I will soon be working more closely with when I take over my new responsibilities...

3. I have been asked to join a wine tasting class with someone I used to work with (not sure about this one)

4. I have set up a get acquainted dinner for the other 4 couples who are going to PV next year...One of the ladies is becoming a very good friend through all of this planning...

5. I have looked into the "Red Hat Society" for my mom. She needs a friend or two very much so...and I need her to find a friend or two... (gads, am I a horrible daughter for wanting that???)

So...I have realized the importance of sending those thoughts out to the universe...mine certainly rippled some answers my way!!!

Thanks for all of your ideas...I keep rereading them and am determined to make new friends inspite of my shyness around others!!!

Sorry BOo....I have visited the site alot the past two weeks...but have been in a funk as to what to post. Nothing exciting happening about money...and not much else happening. I have missed you and everyone else and decided it was time to check in...I am still pondering that trip to DC next Febuary and WHO I might get to meet from here when I go...

Sounds like you are off to a great start; I need to get out of the house (I work at home) and see what I can develop.

Good for you! I'm always amazed at what can happen when I step back a little and just 'let' things happen, rather than try to 'make' things happen. (I'm a fiddler, which isn't always a good thing - ha!)

We have a good size "Red Hat" presence in my town - they look like they have a lot of fun. Your mom may enjoy the group. Here there is also the "Pink Hats" - the daughters of the Red Hats. I'm not sure if they meet separately, but they sometimes do things with their mothers - though if you're trying to find a separate activity for your mom, forget I mentioned it!

We have a local forum named after the city I live in. I made friends on the forum and now we all meet for lunches and parties all the time. We had a big "cook out" on the lake on June 29th and another one on 4th of July. Whenever the florida forum members come to town, we all get together for lunch or dinner. Maybe you have a local forum??

It seems like taking those few first steps are the hardest. Then you're out having a good time and realize that everyone is in the same boat! We're all so busy with our obligations that making friends and socializing tends to fall by the wayside since we are so tired.

I think www.meetup.com is a great site for meeting people who share the same interests as you. I've gone on several outings with the Denver photography group and my roommate has had a lot of fun with her hiking group. She is new to the area and wanted to enjoy the great CO outdoors.

Good for you for making this a priority, the benefits will be worth the effort!

OMG - You are not a terrible daughter for wanting a friend for your mom! We all need personal contacts other than family - they provide a needed perspective and its a release. If she feels a need to gossip about you - who is she going to talk to? Smile
I know what you mean about blogging. You can only complain so much about prices, or manipulating your 401K, or any other money items. I'm running a bit dry myself.
