Harvest Time!

September 22nd, 2011 at 03:49 am

Oh the bounty of fall...My cherry tomatoes are ripening at the rate of 2-3 cups every couple of days. This is the first time I have grown cherry tomatoes and they come off the vine so darn sweet! YUM.

Next year, I dont think I will grow lettuce- mine was bitter this year..and I really enjoy costco's romaine lettuce and get six heads for about $3... But I will definately do zucchini, tomatoes, and sunflowers. I am still waiting on the pumpkins..

I was reading the following article with interest today. The writer decided to write a series of articles about eating on a $30 per week budget (which is what she determined is the average food stamp budget) The commenters on the article pretty much ripped the story to shreds. It will be interesting to read her follow up stories...

Personally I think most, if not all, the responders to the article are full of it. No way on $30/week do they eat a full allotment of fruits, veggies, meats, other proteins, dairy, etc. A single person maybe once in awhile, not all the time. But a family of 2 or more? Nope. Unless you own your own chickens, cows, pigs and/or goats. Also you'd have to have a full garden and orchard.

I think many responders, under anonymity, are critical and overly judgemental. I am interested in seeing what the writer learns during this challenge. I think she seems like a fish out of water this first week..it will be interesting to see if she sticks to it and hones her frugal skills...

TR - I was thinking the same thing about the author - what will she learn during this challenge? I think that's the point. There would be no story if she just went in and shopped perfectly the first week. I don't get internet commenters - people seem so angry. I guess it's a place to safely let it all out. Hmmm, maybe I should try a $30/week food challenge as a single person. Something to think about. Thanks for sharing the article.

$30/week - well rounded diet? Easy peasy.

I think it's all relative. Produce in California is cheap and widely varied. This may be harder to pull of in other areas of the States.

I personally eat a lot of meat, too, so I am not thinking of any extreme/cheap diet. I don't drink much but tap water. People spend a LOT of money on drinks.

P.S. What I don't understand is how all the articles are always about how food stamps pay $700/month for groceries (family). & people arguing if that is enough. So, now, average food stamps are $30/week? what gives?

My food budget is less than $30/week, and I eat quite well. Most weeks I spend under $20. Once you have the basics, just getting the week to week necessities doesn't cost all that much. (for a single person) If I could get myself back to the No-s diet philosophy (ie stop buying so much junk food) then I could do it fairly easily on 12 - 15/week.

My budget is a hair higher 40-45$, and only because I like drinking my daily drip coffee (just one), along w/eating a Saturday brunch, read the paper, and chill. Didn't Jeffrey describe his experience on spending 1$/day on food?

I don't understand the hostility either - there's a lot of difference between a couple hundred/ week and thirty/week. Learn a little bit, drop your food budget a little bit, eat what you do buy. You can learn a lot if you stop with the hating. Smile
