Keep your fingers crossed!!!

September 5th, 2011 at 12:01 am

DH has been sending his resume up to Alaska every few months since he was laid off two years ago. In the meantime, when he came home he went back to work for his previous job. He makes decent money, but he is not happy. He LOVED working on the slope and has wanted to return ever since he got back home.

They called today. They are running a background check on hom Tuesday, (which will be fine)...and then it is just details. He will be starting for a 90 day trial period for either side to determine if this is a good fit or not. I know he is so committed to making this work that he will do everything possible to be successful.

He is like a little kid today. So excited.

THis job is a little different from his last...he will work 3 on/ 3 off. Which equals working 26 weeks and having 26 weeks off. He will make about $20k more than he currently makes, but we will have to pay travel costs each time he comes home- which adds up. However, he will still net more than he currently does. NOT BAD for a job he will love. (The job he has now gives him 5 days off a year)...

I am keeping my fingers crossed that all goes as smoothly as he hopes. THis would be an amazing opportunity for him. Smile

I think its great - Since he would be on and off on a regular schedule, perhaps frequent flier miles or the company has some sort of bulk travel deal with a travel agency? Wonder if LuckyRobin's DH has some tips?

Well, my DH uses the same airline (Alaskan) every time and has an Alaskan airline VISA for miles that he buys his tickets with and charges his hotel on. He also uses the same hotel that a lot of slope employees use in Anchorage, the Lakeshore Motor Inn which does a frequent stayers program, too, for slope employees. He usually gets 2 free stays a year. Even though travel expenses are high, you still come out far ahead in income because of the much higher wages. It is a lot harder to earn the Gold status which gives you all the free upgrades to first class when you work a 3 and 3. 2 and 2's make that easier. DH is actually taking a couple of long way around trips before the year is end so he can get his gold status back. He'll fly from home to Seattle to Portland to Anchorage and then on the way home he'll fly to San Francisco before coming back. A little crazy but the benefits of Gold status (more free flights and less black out dates are worth it).

Anyway, I hope he gets the job. Slope wages can make such a huge difference in your life. What does your husband do exactly? Mine's an electrical engineer.
