Flour...and frugality

March 31st, 2006 at 09:17 pm

I was thinking...today I opened my 3rd 25 pound bag of flour this year.

I tried to approximate how much flour I had bought in my pre-frugal days...and I think I can honestly say that I have used more flour in the first three months of 2006 as I used in all the other 'mom'years combined!!!

Last year when I started baking, I pulled out my baking powder and dusted off the cobwebs...I noticed a shocking experation date...I won't reveal the exact date, we will just say that baking powder was correctly programed to make it through Y2K.... give or take 8 years...lol

When my new frugal journey began, I remember digging though five different cupboards and drawers to come up with all the ingredients and tools needed to make something. By the time I had, I was out of the mood to bake....and not real eager to have to do it again soon...so i rearranged my kitchen and now have a 'baking center' with everything right where I need it. And I bake all the time and love it!

And my family is loving it...This morning, my DS stopped by and asked if I would 'please' make him waffles...so I made a nice big batch of batter that will last all weekend...my secret ingredients...a pinch of nutmeg, a little cinnamon and a tsp of madagascar bourbon vanilla...throw in some blueberries and we have just duplicated heaven on earth in my kids eyes!!!

Just wondering... are you baking to save money where you would have purchased store bought items like frozen waffles, etc...

I'm considering this now... cool idea!!

Same thing w/ a garden, though that's going to have to wait until we move.

I am baking so many things instead of buying. Because I really got everything organized (and I am an admitted UNORGANIZEDHOLIC) I am able to save money by 1. baking from scratch...and 2. staying out of the stores. Evertime we go to the store it is an IMPULSE SHOPPING OPPORTUNITY.... I find that I can bake pizza's and waffles and muffins and on and on using bulk supplies and stay out of the stores for alot longer.

I love it when I bake something from scratch and one of the kids here will say "better than Mc Donalds" or whatever restaurant they have been to with their mom. Smile
I make up my dry ingredients for a batch of waffles times a couple dozen and have them in little baggies. The kids help get these all measured on another day.......so when someone wants waffles (or pancakes) I've got little "kits" all ready. Makes it way easier for little kids to cook this way.
I don't think my pancake mix is truly much less expensive than the store bought mixes, BUT not going to the store is the cheap part for me too!!
