Headlight Rant

December 27th, 2006 at 05:59 am

Ugh.

Why do so many people wait until the LAST possible second to dim their brights when driving at night?

I always dim mine when I see the first sign that a car is coming. Usually I can see a light approaching over a hill, or around a curve...so I know there is probably a car coming and go ahead and dim the lights...if Im wrong, I can beam em up again easily enough. Its such a simple, common courtesy.

We went to dinner tonight with DHs dad and dads new wife.

On the way to the restaraunt, this blasted approaching car had its brights on...which made seeing anything else nearly impossible and sadly, we hit and killed a deer. Poor deer. It was a pretty young female. Dang it.

Interestingly, we passed three other deer walking near the road and then an entire...well, whatever you call a group of deer...looked like a big ol family reunion. Thankfully, no others were IN the road and we didnt do any further damage to the local wildlife.

Needless to say, it put a damper on the evening. I hate seeing any animal accidentally killed like that. Very sad.

Our dinner was at the little mexi restaraunt on the river...we split the bill---so our portion, with tip $35.

I also had received a Kohls gift card and bought a pair of snow boots. 1/2 off. Ive never owned my own...always used an old pair of DHs which are literally 4-5 sizes too big!!! (No, 2 pair of thick socks didnt ever help) Now I will be more inclined to go play in the snow...since I can actually walk!! lol.

Back to the headlight thing for one final thought...or I guess, request...For us 'older' drivers, it gets harder to see when there are bright headlights shining at us at night...Please remember to dim those lights long before you think you need to!!! It may just save a life. Wink

Sorry about the deer. I would find that very upsetting.

I have an hour drive each way to and from school everyday and the drive home is in the dark at this time of year, so this is an issue I am very familiar with. Although I wouldn't consider my eyes old just yet at 33, my corrective lenses are quite strong (-10) which I think makes my eyes more sensitive. It is nearly impossible to see anything when someone has very bright lights. I find it a bigger problem with SUVs driving behind me (they are basically high beams as they shine right in my eyes) and those "whiter" headlights they are now selling with new vehicles. I actually end up speeding to get away from them or I have to pull over to the side of the road and let them pass me.

Here is another driving pet peeve of mine - headlights are not only for after 5pm at night. If it is overcast/ pouring rain/ foggy at any time of the day (and especially if your car is any color other than white), PLEASE turn your headlights on! I know that one of these days someone is going to die in a head-on collision trying to pass because they can't see that car coming the other direction without its' lights on (hopefully not me!!!).

I agree with mariannej when an SUV with high beams on gets behind you forget seeing anything else. Civilty and common sense on the road seem to be in short supply.

    Dear Thrifty Ray,
I am in total agreement with you. I cannot imagine what drivers who leave their "brights' on must be thinking. Makes me wonder if they should be on the road.
I have had the experience too of killing a deer ......... I was going 65 miles perhour on a fourlane it came up absolutely out of nowhere and knocked out my front lights and did some other damage. I was fortunate to keep control of the car and I had a longtime fear of driving after that. It is NO FUN!

I have on occassion forgotten I had my brights on, which I will then notice at the last minute and switch off, but its rare. I am usually the first one to turn them off at the hint of oncoming traffic. Often times an SUV behind a car will appear to have their brights on but they don't. They are just at such a level as to shine directly through your windows and light up your entire car. When they are truly on brights, yeah, you have no option but to pull off or slow to 20 in 55 and make them pass you (if they will, some people don't get the hint).

What I really hate is vehicles that don't have their headlights aimed properly. Instead of tilted down to illuminate the road they are straight on, right in the eyes of oncoming drivers. This is often the case after a headlight is changed and not properly aligned. And I hate those new yellow and blue lights that make visibility better only for their driver and worse for everyone else on the road. Or the vehicle that has 4 to 6 headlights. And klieg lights up on top, too. If you aren't a semi, tow truck, or emergency vehcile, you don't need that many lights! And I hate halogens, but that's another rant for a different day.
