What I am currently doing to save over $100 month

November 7th, 2012 at 04:16 am

I am reflecting tonight on ways that I have changed personally to save money. Nothing Earth shattering...just changes I have made to save a little here and there.

1. I color my own hair and keep a my hair up. I have spent the last few years having my hair colored/cut in a salon by a friend or a co-workers spouse- primarily to support their business - but am back to doing it myself, saving about $50 per month. I cut my own bangs between cuts. Am on month 6 since my last haircut.

2. After about 50 years, I finally learned how to apply nail color to the nails on my right hand. (I am right handed). I practiced until I figured it out. I get compliments on them, so I am happy with my self service results. Savings $25 month

3. No professional waxing or plucking. $10 month

4. I dont buy designer coffee. I take creamer ($3 week) and get free coffee at work. Savings at least $20 month. I buy the store brand of creamer...right now there is a great pumpkin pecan creamer that I love!

5. No bottled water. I've used the same 2 plastic cups with a lid and straw at work and home for about 3 years. I get lots of water- use the free ice at work and dont buy any bottled water. At least 1 bottle or $2 week..or $8 month

6. I dont drink soda. See #5

Just simple ways that I personally save a few dollars here and there.

Other things I do..I make my work clothes last- I dont buy new work clothes often..so taking care of what I have is important.

This morning I had to add a few drops of water to my foundation to get some out of the bottle. I will use it up until the bottle is dry. I also have blush that is broken...but I am careful to open the containter and dab the brush in so that I can use it until it is all gone. I dont wear mascara or lipstick. Inexpensive hairspray from the dollar store works just fine..so does toothpaste and soap.

My makeup brushes are old..but wash up great. My favorite one I got about 10 years ago at a garage sale for .50.

Just ways I choose to stay frugal. What works for me, might not work for others.

This all sounds normal to me. Smile No crazy "extreme cheapie" stories...

I am quite similar. I don't color my hair -- I let it go to its natural silver about ten years ago, and now I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't wear polish and I go easy on the makeup -- I wear eyeliner and mascara, undereye concealer, and on my lips and cheeks I wear the same color -- a combination of old lipsticks melted down with a little vaseline and stored in a little jar. It's a pretty sherry rose color. Sometimes I wear foundation but I usually skip it.

I drink coffee at work -- black -- don't buy bottled water, get most of my work clothes at Goodwill (excellent brands, though). I tell you, we're soul mates!

    All good ideas. Smile
    1. I don't color my hair either. Big Grin I also only get it trimmed only twice a year, sometimes three times.

    2. I know how to apply fingernail polish to both hands, but rarely do it. I really need to take better care of my hands though - esp. in this dry climate!

    3. Me either. Smile
    4. I don't drink coffee at all. Smile
    5. Once in a rare while I get bottled water, but generally I just refill one of the two water bottles I have. (one which broke on Monday after school, so needs to be replaced)

    6. Need to do better on this one!

Other: I don't really wear makeup at all. I have some mascaras and lip sticks that I have no idea how old they are.

Great ideas...I take my coffee from home and I have a small Thermos for my water for lunch...not bottled water.

I color my hair (since age 15!) but notice now that I don't blow dry and my hair is healthy, the die doesn't really stick or last as long. Weird? I get all my hair dye on super clearance or super sale and use ecbs' and coupons from CVS. I don't think I've paid more than $1 a bottle in years. I need to update my cosmetics bag, but plan to do that also using clearance, sales and coupons.

I cut my own hair-- it's long, so it's all trim and bangs. Nothing big.
I have a few "court suits" for work, when I actually have to leave the house and go do something official for work. Most of my work stuff is Calvin Klein bought at a discount, but that looks good and can be mixed and matched with things like simple color t-shirts, etc., but still look professional.
