We had a breakthrough last week with our FD. After 3 years and 15 different foster placements, something clicked and she started talking, and talking and talking. All the pent up anger came spilling out. I knew she had been through a LOT, but had no idea. In the end, one of the parents is now in jail and will likely be there for at least 6 years and the other will be charged soon. And now that it is all out (? - altho I am sure there is more) and we have a better idea of what we are dealing with, this young girl can start the healing process. As can her 3 sisters. Two are now old enough to be on their own, but there is a younger sister who lives at the opposite end of the state. That will soon change and she will be coming to live with us too. I pray for guidance on how to best nurture them.
It is simply astounding how FD has changed since she opened up. No more extreme highs and lows, no self harm, no ER visits. She is HAPPY. I am sure as things progress she will have bumps in her recovery, but wow. She is a different kid. A daily delight to have here.
I plan to finish my time out at my job, and come June become a full time foster mom. This is not how I envisioned my early retirement, but life works in mysterious ways and we feel this is the RIGHT thing to do. Thankfully between me and my daughters we are like 5 sister moms to ALL of the kids and there is always support for whatever need comes up.
A new journey for sure...
