Gift Cards, etc...

April 8th, 2006 at 11:47 pm

I have been reading alot of your posts regarding gift cards and cancelling services...so I decided to try a couple out and see how it goes. I signed up for my points recently and received an offer to join 'Complete home" for $1 and will get a $20 Lowes card....I just have to remember to cancel within a month.

Then, I opened two new accounts (Wells Fargo= $25 GC and BofA = $50)...The Wells account has to be open for 30 days, the BofA is 50 days (I believe)..I'll see what happens...

I am planning to utilize the Complete Home website while I have this one month trial and see what benefits there are.

I'll update on what happens.

I was reading about Flash's card-o-thonSmile I want to try this myself but I'm afraid to forget to cancel the membership and get hit with the monthly fee.

Well, I'm really interested and just have to try this.

    Good luck to youSmile

You'll be very lucky to get the $20 Lowes card within a month, and you need to still be a member for them to send it out. So don't cancel til you get that card in your hand. Check out the gift cards they offer at 20% off (well, a rebate actually)--it will probably be worthwhile buying a few, and you'll still be ahead after paying a month's membership. Just buy them right now, so you get the rebate right after May 1. Again, you have to still be a member at the time the rebate is due to be paid.

You don't need to wait for the member packet to come in the mail, just call in and get the membership number and you can go ahead on the website.

I like these things, but you have to be very careful about the timing!

I've done all of the offers that Flash mentioned and they're all on the up-and-up. After you sign up, you get an email with your membership #. A few days later, you get another email titled "how to get the item you requested". Fill out the information, including your member number, and submit it. The gift card comes within a week to 10 days, plenty of time before you need to cancel. Also, as soon as you sign up, you get immediate access to the site, and can log back on to the site with your member number as soon as you get that first email.

The only downside to the deal is this: when you call to cancel, they will ask you why ("checked it out and didn't think I'd use it enough to justify paying for it"). Then, they'll remind you that you have some time left in your trial period (and they may offer to extend it for you) and they'll sometimes offer additional vouchers to get you to continue to trial. Just keep saying "no thanks" and they'll give you a cancellation #.

Also, as Flash mentioned in a previous post, you can actually sign up for these offers several times, by using a different credit card for the $1 fee. I'd wait to do it the second time until the first one is finished...the offers don't seem to be going anywhere.

As for the best way to remember to cancel, I use two methods: I write a reminder in my calendar about 3 weeks out. Also, I leave the email with my member # in my inbox. That way, everytime I check my emails I see it. Then when I cancel, I delete the message.

So far, I've gotten $40 in Exxon gcs, $20 BBB, and $20 Lowes, and $60 Circuit City. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks so much mjrube...I am eager to have this be a success story...so I will follow your advise closely. I have been thinking how nice all these GCs will be for birthday and christmas gifts!! Fingers crossed!

I tried to only blog offers that sent the gc's direct (no turn around mail-ins, etc.) and I've always received them within 10 days.

I put a "reminder" note on my computer to email me everyday, after the first week, to cancel. That way I remember to call.

The fine print -- on the sites, they actually give you the cancel by mail option and address. I've done it, and it worked just as well. Price of a stamp, but no arguments!

I usually cash the checks for the offers that I get from my CC companies and then cancel the membership as soon as I get the packet. It's a nice way to get a few extra bucks. I haven't been able to find these other deals that offer free gift cards... what are some of the websites?? I am very interested to try them out. Thanks!

Oh and where on the Complete Home website can I buy home depot or lowes gift cards for 20% off? I can't seem to find it.

    Thanks!
