Live Below the Line

April 24th, 2013 at 06:41 pm

I stumbled onto an article that discusses a challenge of living on $1.50 a day for 5 days. It is called "Live Below the Line" and will run from April 29-May 3. Basically, people are taking the challenge to live on $7.50 worth of food for 5 days- which is below the extreme poverty line and is meant to simulate what 1.4 billion people worldwide survive on.

Here is the link that tells about it.

Sounds intriguing. It will be interesting to watch the challenge and see the results and awareness that come from it.

Now its got me thinking...

I saw reference to that today, too. I think it could be quite humbling to participate, but I don't expect I will on those dates, as I have company arriving.

I participated in this last year. While it was trying , definitely not impossible. I am single with no dietary restrictions, so perhaps a little less trying than for some. For example, this week at our Albertson's a bag of potaotes (5 lbs i think) is $.79 -very filling and versatile.. Our Rite aid has a special aisle where things are $1.00 ( recently i cruised by there and i saw packs of instant oatmeal ( 4 or 5 packs) for $1- I thought i kept my diary from last year with my menus but i ate ok- i kept my eye peeled for produce in the dented bin and bought one piece at a time ( example one apple, one carrot)- i used coupons,at the time our albertson's tripled 3 coupons-I remember buying a cooked rotisserie chicken from Safeway- it was on special for $5 and i had a $3.00 off coupon-i am certain i ate from that chicken all week-i know i made egg salad sandwiches or tuna-

Anyway -it really made me focus on what i was eating and i relaized that because of that i take food in my pantry for granted- it's made me a liitle batty by the end of the week that i might want to eat a snack but i had eaten my $1.50 worth of food already....
